Cooking is like LOVE. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all” (Harriet Van Horne )

Know me better

🙂Hello, my name is Antonio Jose Ribeiro Goncalves, my friends call me Toni. I am Portuguese, born in Lisbon Portugal, in Alfama famous hillside old suburb with superb views to the river Tajo. Alfama is the oldest neighbourhood of Lisboa. Finding your way to Alfama is absolutely amazing, because you have to follow narrow stairways and steep tiny streets. In the end, you get rewarded with the great atmosphere of the area, locals, deliciously smelling food and beautiful landmarks.”  I studied and received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications  from the University of South Africa (UNISA).

I’ve lived abroad for nearly 35 years, first in South Africa, Luxembourg, then in Bilbao Basque country Spain. Cooking has always been my passion. When I was a young boy I loved to cook, spending hours in the kitchen with my aunt Fernanda, making a mess but learning delicious traditional Portuguese recipes, using authentic, seasonal, fresh ingredients and preparing everything from scratch.

Today, I still have that same young boy spirit when I’m in the kitchen; I like to experiment with different tastes and textures, acquired from the Portuguese and Basque culinary culture to create my own personal recipes. However, I try to remain faithful to the authentic Portuguese traditions, flavours, and ingredients. I normally say that “at a good table one does not grow old“ the pleasure of good food, wine, and company is such that the passage of time is suspended.

For me food is not only nourishing but also comforting, loving, fun, pleasurable, and stimulating and well-being. Cooking, eating well elaborated food and staying active have always been my life-long passion and indeed way of life.
